• An intra-uterine gestation sac is usually visualised by trans-vaginal
scanning at HCG >1500 IU/l
and by trans-abdominal scanning at HCG >6000IU/l
• A pseudo-sac is identified in 10-20% of ectopic pregnancies

The Management of Early Pregnancy Loss
Ultrasound diagnosis of miscarriage should only be considered with a mean gestation sac diameter >/= 25mm (with no obvious yolk sac), or with a fetal pole with crown rump length >/=7mm (the latter without evidence of fetal heart activity)
and by trans-abdominal scanning at HCG >6000IU/l
