Myasthenia gravis

Myasthenic crisis requiring ventilation may be precipitated by the stress of labour and delivery, inadvertent change in medication or surgery
• Atropine is a muscarinic antagonist - nicotinic receptors are affected in myasthenia gravis, so atropine is not effective

• Trans-placental passage of antibodies may cause neonatal myasthenia gravis with poor suckling, feeble cry and respiratory difficulties

Polyhydramnios is a recognised complication - swallowing difficulties in the fetus
