Hyperthyroidism in pregnancy

90% due to Graves disease - secondary to autoimmune thyroid stimulating antibodies (IgG antibodies) which cross the placenta

Symptoms may improve in third trimester


There is risk of post-partum exacerbation


Because of the possibility of malignancy, a solitary thyroid nodule should be investigated during pregnancy
